Though stainless steel offers corrosion resistance across the board, not all are created equal. Ferritic and martensitic grades are often less expensive but do not hold up as well as austenitic grades. For example, 316 stainless steel has significant resistance because it contains the alloy molybdenum which enhances this quality.
It is true that a good portion of stainless steel grades can be welded by the most standard welding practices but can have a mixed reaction depending on the type. Austenitic grades are usually suggested over ferritic and martensitic grades.
Though most stainless steels can be machined, adjustments to elements in the stainless steel can be made to avoid work hardening. There are a variety of free machining grades available, such as 420F stainless steel.
If you need formability for your stainless steel, a less brittle option is an ideal solution. Similar to welding, austenitic grades are usually best because it can be fabricated by all standard fabrication methods.
