Stainless steel has been around for over 100 years, and in that time it has gone through a lot of development. Through the course of that development, different grades of stainless steel have been introduced for different purposes. At Alliant Metals, we stock several grades of stainless steel for multiple industries. In this post, we will take a look at one of the heavy hitters: 440C stainless steel. Here are some of the uses for this steel in the 400 series.
There are three kinds of 440 stainless steel: 440A, 440B, and 440C. With a carbon content ranging from 0.95% to 1.20%, 440C is the hardest and most resistant to rolling-contact fatigue. After heat treatment, 440C can reach a hardness of 58-62 HRC. These properties make it a tough and durable steel grade and ideal for anti-friction rolling bearings.
Its corrosion resistance also makes 440C stainless steel excellent for rolling contact bearings. It exhibits good resistance to fresh water, atmosphere, alkalies, and even mild acids. Bearings made of 440C are best for use in corrosive environments with high oxidation and no lubrication.
All the characteristics that make 440C stainless steel excellent for contact bearings also make it ideal for knife blades. One of the most important attributes of knife steel is how long it will hold its edge. Because 440C is hard and durable, it can achieve a sharp edge that won’t chip and will hold through heavy use. While these attributes make 440C a good material for kitchen knives, they make it even better for knives intended for outdoor use.
Many knife makers favor 440C steel because of its corrosion resistance as well. Knives designed for kitchen or outdoor use need to be resistant to water and mild acids, as they often come in contact with those substances. Many foods are acidic and kitchen knives are washed often, whether in a commercial or domestic setting. Knives intended for outdoor use need to withstand the elements that hunters and campers subject them to.
